Notes:
A properly outfitted Y-8 like the Fool’s Gold is a tough-as-nails, gunship-class POB. It has a massive bridge with wraparound view, large rooms aft of the bridge, and 9 rooms of 4 different sizes and configurations on its lower deck. Introduced with the 2005 “Rage of the Wookiees” expansion pack, the Y-8 was the largest and most powerful POB ship until the debut of the Vigo Black Sun gunship in Chapter 8, January of 2008 (see: decoration gallery of the Fenris Caller). The interior space of the Y-8 still exceeds the interior space of the Chapter 8 Rebel and Imperial gunships. Although the Vigo is the coolest POB in SWG history—in terms of decoration area and possibility, as well as stock interior appearance—the Y-8 is still a close second even after three years flying through the game.
The Fool’s Gold does mine asteroids, but it’s primary function is a roleplaying combat ship that engages in pirate activities against the Empire, Black Sun, and various slavery rings. The challenge was turning an interior designed specifically and solely for space mining into a combat-ready assault ship that visitors would instantly believe is a fully operational pirate ship. After nearly 100 passengars, the design of the Fool’s Gold has never failed to fulfill that goal.
The interior design of the Fool’s Gold, like its four turrets, pilot-controlled cannon, and other parts, continues to undergo periodic upgrades and minor changes as the mood strikes me. For instance, the old Metal Chair bridge chairs have since been replaced by newer red Reclining Chairs (named “Acceleration Chairs”), and with the introduction of the /rotate Roll and Pitch commands in Chapter 8, the swords on the bow plaque have been rotated to cross diagonally beneath the skull for a more realistic pirate ship emblem.
Notes: This is the only place I’ve ever liked using the entire length of a large Mustafarian table. Most of the time I use it, I bury part of it in a wall or step to reduce its enormous length. In the ready room aft of the bridge and the connecting Ops room, there is plenty of space for a tight-quartered, submarine-style conference room and simple crew lounge.
Notes: The lower deck of the Y-8 contains several rooms begging for decoration. In keeping with the theme of a battle-ready pirate ship, the lower deck of the Fool’s Gold houses assault droids in a “Boarding Party Rally Station” near an escape pod hatch, the opulent Captain’s quarters, the utilitarian crews quarters, several cargo bays, and a cramped and noisy engine room complete with crafted piping systems and a “Chief” (for Chief Engineer) droid welding a patch into place on the coolant pipe.
